This lovely historical hamlet was founded in 1882 and named for
railroad pioneer William Dudley
Chipley. The town grew in the
late 19th century serving as
a watering station for steam locomotives. Chipley, pop.
4100 retains a serene, small
town aura that enchants
visitors with its colorful
railroading past.

Quaint Town With a
Railroading Past

Railroad Avenue in downtown
Chipley is a shaded district of
shops beside the track that reflects
the town's immutable history.
The residents of Chipley extend an old-fashioned welcome to enjoy its
rich heritage while strolling
among the shops.

The quaint downtown district
offers a walking tour among
restored nineteenth century and
antebellum homes. Several are of
brick construction from local
Washington
County brick. The
eclectic mix of architecture
includes: Mediterranean revival,
Victorian, Romanesque revival ,
Colonial revival, and Second
Empire styling. Some
homes with Corinthian columns and some with
cantilevered overhangs.

Annual Events in Chipley include the
"Panhandle Watermelon Festival",
last Saturday in June and the "Day in the Park", occurring in May.
