St. Petersburg
Like an oasis in a desert of noise and
hub-bub, Sunken Gardens remains the
most tranquil place in the city of St.
Petersburg. Created in 1903 out of
a sinkhole and a lake, it is one of
the oldest attractions in Florida,
officially opening in 1935
by owner George Turner.

Renovations are presently underway
to the 1926 Mediterranean Revival-
style building which once had been
billed as "the world's largest gift
shop." The building will soon
become a hands-on
children's museum.

Although only 4 acres in size, Sunken
Gardens is so replete with flora and intricately designed in a maze fashion that it feels
more like 40 acres! There
is wildlife to observe, as well as occasional animal shows and
guided tours at no extra charge.

In 1999, the City purchased the garden and is emphasizing the theme of a tropical
rainforest.
